Caribbean-style sautéed smoked herring stands out as a beloved breakfast dish. The recipe pairs wonderfully with bread, bakes, or dumplings. Peppers, onions, and garlic create a harmonious blend that delivers satisfaction and authenticity.


Ingredients

  • 810 oz smoked herring filets.
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced.
  • ½ green pepper, thinly sliced.
  • ½ red pepper, thinly sliced.
  • 23 cloves garlic, crushed.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil.
  • 1 hot pepper (to taste).
  • Fresh thyme.
  • Juice of ½ lime.
  • 2 scallions, chopped.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Herring
    • Place herring in a pot with enough water to cover.
    • Bring to a boil and cook for 10 minutes.
    • Drain and let cool.
    • Remove bones and flake the fish with care.
  2. Prepare the Base
    • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Add sliced onions, red and green peppers.
    • Sauté until vegetables soften.
    • Add crushed garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Combine and Season
    • Add flaked herring to the vegetable mixture.
    • Mix in hot pepper and thyme.
    • Cook for 5 more minutes.
    • Add lime juice and chopped scallions.

Notes

Salt Content: Boiling helps remove excess salt from the herring. Check the taste before adding extra salt.

Bone Removal: Take extra care to remove small bones while preparing the herring.

Heat Level: The amount of hot pepper depends on your spice preference.
