Ingredients
Scale
- 1 can (5 oz) tuna in water, drained
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp finely chopped celery
- 1 tbsp finely chopped red onion
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 slices bread (sourdough, rye, or whole wheat)
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, mix together the drained tuna, mayonnaise, celery, red onion, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper until well combined. Set aside.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. While the skillet warms up, assemble your sandwiches.
- Lay out the bread slices and divide the tuna mixture evenly among them, spreading it to the edges. Top each with a slice of cheddar cheese.
- Butter the outside of the sandwiches with the softened butter, making sure to cover the entire surface for an even golden-brown crust.
- Place the sandwiches in the preheated skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is crispy and golden-brown, and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, let cool for a minute, then slice in half diagonally and serve immediately. Enjoy your classic tuna melt with a side of crispy chips or a fresh green salad.Β
Notes
- For a lighter version, use Greek yogurt or mashed avocado instead of mayonnaise.
- Experiment with different types of cheese like Swiss, provolone, or pepper jack for a fun twist.
- If you prefer a softer bread, try using brioche or white bread instead of sourdough or rye.
