Chepala Pulusu is a traditional South Indian fish curry known for its tangy and spicy flavors. Made with fresh fish and aromatic spices, this dish pairs wonderfully with rice or roti. Here’s how to prepare this delightful recipe.

Ingredients

Gather the following ingredients to make Chepala Pulusu:

  • 500g fish (preferably rohu or catfish), cleaned and cut into pieces
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon tamarind pulp
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

1. Prepare the Fish

Start by marinating the fish pieces with 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and salt. Allow them to sit for about 15 minutes to absorb the flavors.

2. Cook the Base

In a pan, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and slit green chilies, sautéing until the onions turn golden brown.

3. Add Aromatics

Stir in 1 tablespoon of ginger-garlic paste and cook for another minute until it becomes fragrant, enhancing the base of your curry.

4. Tomatoes & Spices

Add the chopped tomatoes along with 1 teaspoon of tamarind pulp, 1 teaspoon of red chili powder, 1 teaspoon of coriander powder, and salt to taste. Cook until the tomatoes soften and the oil begins to separate from the mixture.

5. Combine Fish

Gently add the marinated fish pieces into the pan. Cover with a lid and cook on low heat for about 10–12 minutes or until the fish is cooked through and tender.

6. Garnish & Serve

Once cooked, garnish your Chepala Pulusu with fresh coriander leaves for an added touch of flavor and color. Serve hot alongside rice or roti!
